Let’s Understand Together, What is Yoga?
The word yoga originates from the Sanskrit metal ‘yuj’, which means personal consciousness or soul’s union with universal consciousness or spirit. This is about a five thousand years old style of Indian cultural knowledge. Yoga science has imbibed the full essence of a happy, peaceful and healthy lifestyle. The science of cultural knowledge form is infinite. The practice of yogvidya and meditation which is usually done is just a superficial form of it. The real meaning of this form is deeper and larger than all of us know in today’s lifestyle.

Most of the people consider its exercise as a physical exercise only & it I am not surprised about them. I used to think the same in my early life & often discussed this topic with my group’s people. We believed that this is just another form of any traditional exercise style. After all, even in this, people move, stretch, and adopt complex ways of breathing. However, with time, I also came to understand how huge it is and how deeply it has accommodated the mysteries of life inside us.

Basic History and Origin
Yoga has been in circulation in human civilization for more than a thousand years. The earliest mention of contemplative tradition is found in the Nasadiya Sukta, the oldest living literature in the Rigveda. This again brings us to the Indus-Saraswati civilization. Exactly from the same civilization, the Pashupati seal (coin) on which is a figure enshrined in yoga posture. Which reflects the prevalence of yogavidya in that ancient period. However, in the oldest Upanishads, Brihadaranyaka, there is mention of various physical exercises that have become part of it. In the Chhandogya Upanishad, Pratyahara is mentioned in the practice of pranayama in a Stavana (Veda Mantra) of Brihadaranyaka.

As for the present form of “yoga”, as mentioned, the first mention probably comes in the Kathopanishad. It is the first time in the last eight sections of Yajurveda’s Kathashakha which is a main and important Upanishad. This cultural knowledge form is seen here as a process of traveling within (inner) or developing consciousness.
A group of ascetics mentioned in the Atharvaveda, by dialogue (sabha), emphasizes the physical posture that can develop as yogasana. It is also mentioned in the Samhita that rigorous physical conduct, meditation and penance were practiced by sages, mahatmas, various sages and saints in ancient times. Journey of Yoga
Yoga has gradually emerged as a concept and along with Bhagavad-gītā. A detailed mention is found in the Shantiparva of the Mahabharata. There are more than twenty Upanishads and Yoga Vashisthas available, including the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad-Gita, which have already been said to be about it, the union of the mind with the Supreme Consciousness.

By the way, this traditional knowledge art has countless benefits, and it can be said that it is less than what is known. Yogavidya is beneficial for all, old or young, healthy (fit) or weak. It leads everyone to progress. This art has never been unknown to us. We have been doing this since we were a child. Whether it is the “cat stretch” posture that strengthens the spine or the wind-free posture that enhances digestion, we will always find infants doing some form of yoga throughout the day.
